What do you mean by interior farming?

The interior farming or indoor farming is a process of growing plants or crops in a large quantity in the indoor area. The method of hydroponics is usually used in indoor farming. The artificial light such as LED and other nutrients are put into use for making the plants grow. In interior farming, you can produce a wide range of plants such as herbs, tomatoes, lettuce, peppers, vegetables, and fruits. Moreover, this type of farming can also work best in your residential zone and commercial places. In the cities, the high-rise buildings are developing rapidly. As a result, the large scale of land is not available in the outdoors. Therefore, interior farming is replacing outdoor farming in metropolitan cities.

The prominence of hydroponics in indoor farming

Hydroponics plays a major role while doing interior farming. What is hydroponics? How is it important in indoor farming? Basically, in hydroponics, the plants are grown in water with the help of other nutrient-enriched solutions. In normal agriculture, soil is a vital part of growing crops. While there is no soil required in hydroponics. Instead of soil, the roots are supported with the help of clay pellets, vermiculite, rock wool, peat moss, and fertile. The prime role of hydroponics is to let the roots of the plants meet the nutrient solutions directly while making the plant roots have sufficient access to oxygen which helps the plants develop properly.

Positive sides of hydroponics

There are several benefits of implementing hydroponics in interior farming. Have a quick glance over the benefits in the pointers enumerated below.

1. It had been noticed that the plants grow at a rapid speed in the process of hydroponics. If you set up a plant properly, then the plants will probably grow at a faster rate and the production scale is also high as compared with the plants which are grown with the help of soil.

2. The plants will procure a good amount of nutrients easily. As a result, the plants will grow faster. The best thing of hydroponics is that a small root system will help the plant get the nutrients which will further aid the root system to grow upstairs instead of growing downstairs.

3. The soil-based plants require more water. On the contrary, the plant in the hydroponics system will get a balanced nutrient solution and will use less water. On top of all, the hydroponics system is suitable for all types of environments.

What are the types of hydroponics systems?

You can access countless types of hydroponics systems that are accessible in the market. While implementing a hydroponics system, various techniques have been used in order to gain the nutrient solution to the plants. What are these techniques? These techniques are deepwater culture, nutrient film technique, aeroponics, ebb and flow technique, wicking, and drip system.

What is the reason behind using interior farming?

The main cause of bringing indoor farming into use is to strengthen the supplies of local food and to cater fresh vegetables and fruits to the people who reside in the cities. Hydroponics farming or indoor farming requires a small space and produces a large number of crops in the outside area. Some gardeners produce indoor farms on a large scale. Some prefer to produce hydroponics farm in a relatively small zone such as the basement.

The ingredients mixed in the hydroponics farming

Two types of nutrients are used in hydroponics farming. The primary nutrients consist of magnesium, potassium, nitrogen. The secondary nutrients comprise Sulphur, calcium, and phosphorus. You can choose to make the nutrient solution at home or you can purchase the ready-to-use nutrients solutions from the local store. Some other micronutrients such as copper, boron, zinc, manganese, and iron are also used in the nutrient solution to make it more effective.

Bear in mind some useful tips

a) Always maintain a stable temperature of water in the reservoir which should be between 65 and 75 degrees. The water temperature can be maintained with the help of a water chiller or water heater.

b) In case you notice that your plants are not looking healthy, then you should check the pH and adjust it accordingly.

c) It is imperative to keep changing the nutrient solution in the reservoir every two weeks.

d) To keep the nutrient solution oxygenated and to have a regular circulation of oxygen, you should use an air pump which has an air stone and it is correctly connected with a flexible tube.

e) Once you are done with the growing cycle, it is necessary to clean, sterilize and flush the whole hydroponics system. In addition, you should make sure to drain the reservoir by eliminating the debris and then operate the system for nearly a day.

f) Whether you buy the solution from a store or make it at your place, you should keep the solution in a food-grade container where sunlight does not reach and in the room temperature.

g) You will come to know if you have used the right amount of solution by looking at the leaves. If your plant has received a high amount of solution, then the color of the leaves will turn into brown. If the plant has received less amount of a solution, then the color of the leaves will convert into yellow.

h) You can grow all types of vegetables in hydroponics farming. But, there are some vegetables such as strawberry, cucumber, leafy greens, and capsicum thrive best in the hydroponic system.
